“The greatest danger to our future is apathy.” -Jane Goodall

“I am sometimes asked “Why do you spend so much of your time and
money talking about kindness to animals when there is so much cruelty to
men?” I answer: “I am working at the roots.”
-George T. Angell 1823-1909

“Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

“If we are not raising new generations to be better stewards, then there is no hope” -Dr Jane Goodall

“For animals in circuses, there is no such thing as “positive reinforcement”—only varying degrees of punishment and deprivation. To force them to perform these meaningless and physically uncomfortable tricks, trainers use whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks, and other painful tools of the trade.” -www.circuses.com

“Thousands of people who say they love animals sit down once or twice a day to enjoy the flesh of creatures who have been utterly deprived of everything that could make their lives worth living and who endured the awful suffering and the terror of the abattoirs.”–Jane Goodall

“It is a terrible thing that religious people today can be so indifferent to the cruelty of the farms, shrugging it off as so much secular, animal rights foolishness. They above all should hear the call to mercy.” (from Dominion)-Matthew Scully

“You must teach your children that the ground beneath
their feet is the ashes of your grandfathers. So that they will respect
the land, tell your children that the earth is rich with the lives of
our kin. Teach your children what we have taught our children, that the
earth is our mother. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the
earth. If men spit upon the ground, they spit upon themselves.” -Chief Seattle

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. -Mahatama Gandhi

“The 4.8 pounds of grain fed to cattle to produce one pound of beef for human beings represents a colossal waste of resources in a world still teeming with people who suffer from profound hunger and malnutrition.

According to the British group Vegfam, a 10-acre farm can support 60 people growing soybeans, 24 people growing wheat, 10 people growing corn and only two producing cattle. Britain—with 56 million people—could support a population of 250 million on an all-vegetable diet. Because 90 percent of U.S. and European meat eaters’ grain consumption is indirect (first being fed to animals), westerners each consume 2,000 pounds of grain a year. Most grain in underdeveloped countries is consumed directly.
While it is true that many animals graze on land that would be unsuitable for cultivation, the demand for meat has taken millions of productive acres away from farm inventories. The cost of that is incalculable. As Diet For a Small Planet author Frances Moore Lappé writes, imagine sitting down to an eight-ounce steak. “Then imagine the room filled with 45 to 50 people with empty bowls in front of them. For the ‘feed cost’ of your steak, each of their bowls could be filled with a full cup of cooked cereal grains.”

Harvard nutritionist Jean Mayer estimates that reducing meat production by just 10 percent in the U.S. would free enough grain to feed 60 million people. Authors Paul and Anne Ehrlich note that a pound of wheat can be grown with 60 pounds of water, whereas a pound of meat requires 2,500 to 6,000 pounds.” http://www.emagazine.com/view/?142

“The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creatures that cannot.” ~Mark Twain, What Is Man, 1906

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. ~Dalai Lama

“The human spirit is not dead. It lives on in secret…. It has come to believe that compassion, in which all ethics must take root, can only attain its full breadth and depth if it embraces all living creatures and does not limit itself to mankind.”  ~Albert Schweitzer

This little guy just was not afraid…he walked into my hands after watching him for 15 minutes. I stuck my hand out to see if he would run away…and he didn’t. He sat in my hands for 10 to 15 minutes before he decided to move on.

“Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.” ~Thomas A. Edison

“When it comes to having a central nervous system, and the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy.” ~Ingrid Newkirk

“Our task must be to free ourselves… by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and it’s beauty.
-Albert Einstein

“The human species is driving itself full speed into an evolutionary dead-end. We are destroying the planet and everything we do kills animals. We have lost our moral compass. We think in terms of profit and power rather than ethics and compassion. We no longer have any reverence for life or any sense of connection with the natural world. We think we are made in the image of God and that God made everything for us. We see ourselves as conquerors of nature rather than citizens of a vast bio community. We are technologically sophisticated and morally retarded. We have no conception of the importance of nonhuman life forms in sustaining ecosystems. We fail to realize that what we do to the animals we do to ourselves. And all the while, we live in the fantasy land of entertainment and distractions whereby we focus more on the sex lives and surgical make-overs of movie stars than the greatest challenge our species has ever faced. I believe that animal liberation is the next great liberation movement on this planet, and that by promoting respect for nonhuman animals, we are advancing human moral evolution.” ~Dr Steve Best

  1. This post was extremely confronting, but not in a rude, aggressive way. The caption with the grubby kitten up the top almost made my heart stop more than anything. I’m still not sure if I could ever become vegan; I’ve spent so many years destroying myself and restricting myself and it seems a bit backwards for my circumstance; but I’ve started to be incredibly aware of buying organic produce and moving my diet closer to that of a vegan but still allowing myself readily to eat dairy and honey when I want (I’m vegetarian.) I think I need to visit this page regularly to keep myself in check though; some of these pictures really make you think hard about where you stand in life. Thank you so much for this!

    • Hi there! Thanks for stopping by! I totally understand. I felt the same way when I first became a vegetarian in 2006…thinking about how I could never fully be vegan. I became a vegetarian for ethical reasons, but reading more about animal products had pushed me to becoming a vegan. My daughter actually helped a lot too. Because of her, I cook and eat way healthier than I have ever before. I love how we eat now because it makes me do a lot of experimenting, which is super fun!
If you have the chance, you should check some of these books out:

      -Annie Phyo’s Raw Food Kitchen
      -Vegan with a Vengeance
      -Unprocessed by Chef AJ

….these are really good. I just finished Chef AJ and she has inspired me to “take it up a notch” with the healthy eating! LOL

      Have a wonderful day!

  2. It is kindness and compassion towards animals or fellow beings makes us who we are ‘humans’…I became really happy to know that there are good people left this cruel word….I stopped eating meat a long time ago after i saw a chicken being slaughtered…i stopped it when i felt their pain, they are denied of their right to live and share this world..So now i raise many animals and poultry as i can at my house.
I am happy that we share common thoughts. You have done a great work.
    God bless you
    Good day my Friend.

    • It is wonderful to meet you! I have seen so many animals slaughtered that I cannot bear the thought of putting their flesh in my mouth. I made this blog hoping that people can understand why we live the way we live.

Thank you for stopping by. :)
