Today’s Smoothie and Home-made Vegetable and Fruit Wash

s 015

I make green smoothies every day for my family.   They are delicious and nutritious!  I like to mix/change up the greens every day for the purpose of getting different nutritional benefits from the different types of greens.  At the moment, our garden is producing some wonderful greens that we can use for our breakfasts such as spinach, kale, arugula, tat soi, and lemon balm.

I have never actually tried lemon balm leaves on anything until today.  I decided to try it out in our smoothies.  And, it worked out pretty well!

Smoothie of the day (serves 2):

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 8 fresh strawberries
  • 1 fresh mango
  • 5 pitted dates
  • 3 ice-cubes of wheat grass (optional….see previous post for instructions)
  • 7 leaves of lemon balm (fresh)
  • 1 cup of fresh curly-leaf parsley
  • 1/2 cup of kale
  • 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds
  • 2 tablespoons of pumpkin seeds
  • 4 tablets of spirulina (optional)
  • 1 to 2 cups of coconut water or non-dairy “milk”

Directions:

Blend all ingredients together with a few pieces of ice and serve immediately.

VEGETABLE WASH

I don’t buy the store-brand veggie wash, because I just make it myself.

Ingredients:

Grapefruit Seed Extract Liquid Concentrate – 2 oz – Liquid
Apple Cider Vinegar, Organic Raw Unflavored 32oz
Bob’s Red Mill Non-Aluminum Double Acting Baking Powder Gluten Free — 16 oz

In a large mixing bowl, put about 15 drops of grapefruit seed extract, 2 tablespoons of vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of baking powder in with water.  Mix it up, and soak your veggies/fruits for a few minutes and then rinse your produce.

Strawberry Cucumber Hemp Smoothie

Here is another Smoothie idea.  It is delicious and refreshing!  Perfect for those hot summer days.

It is the season for strawberries!  I just ordered a ton of strawberries from a friend who gets them from a local organic farmer and they are delicious!

Strawberries are awesome because they are packed with nutrients.  It is considered a “super fruit” and it is a great source of vitamin C and helps boost immunity.    The antioxidants in strawberries help fight cancer, promote eye health, fight bad cholesterol, regulates blood pressure, increases elasticity in skin, and much more.

Serves 1 to 2

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of strawberries
  • 1/4 of a large cucumber (about 1/4 cup)
  • 1 cup of coconut water
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds
  • 6 pitted medjool dates

Directions:

Blend all ingredients in your vitamix/blender.  Serve and enjoy!

Bok Choi and Zucchini Fruity Smoothie

Here is another smoothie idea for you guys!

Serves 3

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of raw bok choi
  • 1 small raw zucchini (1/2 cup)
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tangerine (peeled)
  • 1/2 cup of mixed frozen fruit (I used blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and a little bit of pineapple)
  • 1/2 cup of non dairy milk or coconut water
  • 3 tablespoons of chia seeds
  • 5 pitted medjool dates to sweeten (if you don’t have this, use a couple tablespoons of raw agave)
  • 1/2 cup of ice

*Note: I like my smoothies thick.  If this is too thick for you, add more non-dairy milk or coconut water and ice.

If you have a Vitamix, try adding one medium-sized carrot into the mix but you would have to thin it out a bit more.

Directions:

  1. Throw all of the ingredients into your blender and blend for a few minutes.
  2. Adjust sweetness and thickness.
  3. Enjoy!

Chocolate Avocado Green Smoothie (Raw)

Here is another healthy smoothie idea.  Instead of using the traditional banana to create a rich and smooth texture for the smoothie, today I used an avocado instead.  Both are delicious, but the avocado makes it a bit thicker, which I like, but if you are not a fan of thick smoothies, just add more coconut water and ice.

Ingredients:

(serves 3 to 4 people)

  • 1 avocado
  • 3 to 4 cups of kale
  • 1 cup of mixed fruit (I used one peeled and seeded orange and 1/2 cup of mixed berries: black berries, blueberries, and raspberries.)
  • 1.5 to 2 cups of coconut water
  • 4 tablespoons of raw cacao powder
  • 4 tablespoons of hemp seeds
  • 1 large carrot (optional)
  • 5 dates (pitted)
  • 1/2 to 2/3 cup of ice

Directions:

Place all ingredients in your vitamix blender and blend until you have no lumps.

Persimmon and Strawberry Green Smoothie

Here is another smoothie idea for you smoothie lovers!  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

(Serves 2)

Ingredients:

  •  1 VERY ripe persimmon (top removed)
  • 1/3 to 2/3 cup of strawberries
  • 1 cup of spinach
  • 1 cup of kale
  •  5 pitted medjool dates (if you don’t have dates, use raw agave nectar)
  • 1 cup of non-dairy milk (hemp, almond, rice, oat, hazelnut, soy, etc.)
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 4 tablets of spirulina (sea weed tablets) *note: if you don’t have a vitamix, smash these by hand before blending.
  • 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in your vitamix blender.
  2. Blend until there are no lumps.
  3. Serve immediately.
  4. Enjoy!

* Note: if you don’t have a Vitamix blender, you may want to omit the dates and replace it with the agave nectar (to sweeten).  Also, I like my smoothies thick, but if you want yours a bit thinner, you may add more non-dairy milk, ice, or water.  And, if you want to make this a RAW smoothie, use raw coconut water.

Papaya Strawberry Green Smoothie

Here is another smoothie idea.  I love papaya!  It is such a wonderful fruit and it is a great source of vitamin A, C, and E.  It also packs a lot of fiber, folate, and antioxidants.  Papaya even contains iron, calcium, riboflavin, thiamine and niacine.

I have added strawberries and greens (spinach and kale) for added vitamins and minerals.  But, particularly because strawberries are a great source of vitamin C and it helps your body absorb the iron from the greens a little bit better.  Also, the greens are a wonderful source of fiber calcium, antioxidants, Vitamin A, C, K and more!

This is they kind of stuff we start our day off with….super healthy green smoothies!  Hope you will try this out!

(serves 2-3)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of papaya
  • 1 banana
  • 1/3 cup of strawberries
  • 1.5 cups of fresh spinach or kale
  • 2 tablespoons of chia seeds (for omega 3s)
  • 1/4 cup of goji berries (this is not necessary though.  I just added this for more beta carotene)
  • 1 cup of non-dairy milk
  • 2 tablespoons of raw wheat germ (for grains and folic acid benefits) Note: this is also optional
  • 1/2 cup of ice
  • 4 pitted medjool dates (for added sweetness and iron)
  • 4 tablets of spirulina (sea weed) for b12
  • 1/4 cup of blueberries (optional) for added antioxidants and vitamins

Directions:

Throw all of the ingredients in your Vitamix blender and then blend until everything is smooth.

*If you do not have a vitamix, you can replace the medjool dates with raw agave since it probably won’t blend it as well.  You can also omit the goji berries (unless you soak them for a little bit).

*Add more milk and ice if the smoothie is too thick for you.

*If you want to make this all RAW, use coconut water instead of non-dairy milk.
